Behind the News (more commonly known as BTN) is a long-running news programme broadcast on the ABC aimed at school-aged children (8–13 years of age). BTN is aimed at upper primary and lower secondary students with the hope of helping them understand issues and events outside their own lives.
Behind the News explores news using the current language, trendy music and popular culture of youths. The programme explains the basic concepts that underpin the issues and events, while also providing background information in the hopes that children will take an interest.
Behind the News also covers childrens’ issues often overlooked by mainstream news, and makes use of online resources including streaming video of BTN stories, study materials for teachers and additional information and arduous activities for students. BTN explains news items in a simplistic way that is trendy and makes good use of children’s diminished attention span.
Many schools allow students to watch BTN on a regular basis in the hope that it will make them interested in politics, current affairs, sport and various other topics.
