Stanmore Public School Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

We are certainly very lucky to be residing in Australia during this global pandemic. As some of the community COVID restrictions start to relax following weeks of no community transmission in NSW, here at Stanmore PS our school community is starting to enjoy some experiences which have been much missed over the past 12 months.

Year 3-6 PSSA programs will recommence in coming weeks, with training sessions being held off site today; we will celebrate Lunar New Year with our traditional Lion Dance and Chinese Dance Groups on Thursday; our staff are back to face-to-face weekly professional learning after doing it via Zoom last year; and our P&C have announced their first social events in a year, two trivia nights in March. Hopefully we continue in this manner and get to welcome back more special events in our school calendar as the year progresses!

Thank you to our class teachers for their time and effort holding Meet The Teacher evenings this week. While I think most people felt that a face to face meeting in the classroom would have been preferable, it was good that we were able to use technology to provide a substitute, given the Department of Education’s current restrictions. Thanks to all the parents and carers who took the time to log in, watch and ask questions.

Parent-teacher interviews are scheduled for the last week of term 1, and I’m fairly confident these will be able to be held in person on the school site.

Playground Litter and Waste

The staff and I continue to be dismayed by the amount of rubbish that children leave throughout our school grounds. We have increased the number of bins in the playground, and we are planning a school-wide focus on litter and waste through our participation in the Eco-Schools Program this year, but it is an ongoing battle to control the litter problem.

One way families can help is by packing lunches which contain less packaged foods and plastic wraps. Almost all the playground litter is food packaging. Please be mindful of this issue when planning and packing your child’s lunch.

Library Lovers Day

Monday is Library Lovers Day, and as a school we are celebrating the importance of libraries as centres of learning and knowledge. At Stanmore PS, our wonderful teacher librarian will send a surprise picture book to every class to enjoy together on Monday.

I believe that the library is the heart of the school, and that public libraries are extremely important and valuable institutions in our society. They represent the free, open exchange of knowledge and are the hallmark of enlightened, progressive society. Please take the opportunity to support your local library this week!

Lunar New Year

Gong xi fa cai for a happy and healthy Year of the Ox! At Stanmore PS, we are celebrating Lunar New Year this Thursday morning with performances from our Chinese Dance groups and from community organisations, including an exciting Lion Dance!

Could parents of young children please let them know that it will be loud, but fun! We will seat the kindergarten students towards the back as sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming for them. Children who are sensitive to noise will be allowed to bring headphones to the performance.

Thanks for Ms Ji and Ms Lopes for organising this fun and educational cultural celebration!

I look forward to seeing some of you at the P&C AGM next Tuesday evening, either in the staffroom (numbers limited – RSVP essential) or via Zoom. I encourage new parents to become involved in the P&C, it is a great way to make connections and learn more about the wonderful things happening in our classrooms and our school community.

Until next week,

Hugh Miller
